Oldham Parent Carer Forum is recognised by the Department for Education as the Parent/Carer Forum for the Oldham borough.  The Forum is a member of the NNPCF (National Network of Parent Carer Forums) and Contact (formerly Contact a Family) which both feed into national policies and strategies.

Oldham Parent Carer Forum was started in 2010 by 4 parents and carers of children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities. Our driving mission was to ensure that parents and carers had access to meaningful information, advice, and peer support, whilst enabling their voices to be heard to drive change and shape better services to improve the lives and outcomes of children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities aged 0-25.

Our main aim is to ensure the needs of our children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities are met, regardless of their diagnosis or disability.

Over the past 9 years the Forum has evolved and has over 2000 members.  One of our objectives is to bring together parent and carers from across Oldham to find out what is important to them.  As parents/carers you will understand the challenges that families children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities are facing.  Whilst experiences and knowledge will vary depending upon the stage of each family's journey, we are here to provide mutual support, exchange information and experiences and influence policy and practice.  We achieve this by:

  • creating a culture of participation and co-production across education, health, social care and the voluntary sectors. This means that we can become involved in all aspects of designing, commissioning, delivering and reviewing services as an equal partner;

  • empower our members to ensure that their voices are heard at a local, regional and national level; and

  • inspire our partners by sharing good practice and knowledge.

We are an independent service to the Local Authority, Education and Health Services in Oldham, but we work in close partnership with them.  Many of our parents and carers sit on planning and commissioning meetings regularly with the Local Authority, Education and Health providers across the borough and represent the views of parents and carers to shape and design policy, look at what's working well and what can be improved.
